Charles Matthews Obituary

Charles Henry Matthews was born June 27, 1935 in Providence, KY. to parents Edd (Shortie) and Cynthia Mae Mathis. He was called to eternal rest on December 30, 2013 at Baptist Health in Madisonville, KY.

Charles attended school in Providence, KY and graduated from Rosenwald High School as class valedictorian in 1954. Charles joined the United States Army and served for 2 years in the state of Texas before returning home to find work. Upon returning home, Charles found he liked to work with his hands and became a construction worker. He along with other construction workers helped to build the twin bridges that connect Henderson, KY and Evansville, IN. He was a member of Construction Workers Local 561 and retired from construction work after 30 years. Charles loved sports and was an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan.

Brother Charles, as he was lovingly known, professed a hope in Christ at a early age and united with Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Charles loved his church and devoted himself to service; always faithful in attendance, Charles was very active in his church, regularly attending prayer meeting and bible study. He served as Sunday School teacher, Dorcus Circle Instructor, Brotherhood, Church Custodian, member of the male Chorus, Baptist Training Union Instructor and as the Superintendent of the Sunday School for over 20 years. Brother Charles was a man of his word. If Charles told you something, you could count on him to keep his word. Charles loved people and would often help those in need. Active in his community at Christmas, Charles could be found assisting the Providence Ministerial Association in preparing and delivering food baskets for families in need.

Charles lived the way the bible teaches. He believed God’s word and trusted God to supply his needs. He studied the bible daily and would often recite bible passages. Brother Charles had a gift to memorize and quote the scripture. He was a true believer who loved his church family, especially his Pastor and First Lady. Brother Charles often included his favorite scripture Psalms 51 in his prayers. Charles loved walking, meeting and encouraging people. Charles was preceded in death by his only daughter Regina, who was killed in a car accident at the young age of 16.
